Fics: BST (26/100), Happy Birthday (27/100)

Twenty-sixth and -seventh drabbles for the [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho_100 challenge.
Today is a bit special. It's [livejournal.com profile] glitterfairy25's eighteenth birthday :o) So today's drabbles are dedicated to her. The first is one I've been waiting to post for ages (BST stands for British Summer-Time, if anyone's wondering - the clocks went forward today now that the days are getting longer), and the second is a special birthday one. So, happy birthday Laura, I hope you like them!

Fic Name: BST
Rating: G
Prompt: Hours (#006)
Claim: Companions
Companion: Vislor Turlough
Timeline: Between Resurrection of the Daleks and Planet of Fire.
Spoilers: None

“Every year? But that’s stupid!” he exclaims, bemused.

The Doctor raises an eyebrow. “Well that’s the way it’s been for decades. It’s part of their culture, even if you may not understand it.”

“I don’t understand their reasoning. Is light that important to them? I thought humans were a race of people who liked to sleep. Why would they choose to lose an hour of it over something as silly as getting up when the sun rises?”

“Ah. Well, you see Turlough, that’s only in the spring,” he says with a smile. “In the autumn they get to lie in.”

Fic Name: Happy Birthday

Prompt: Celebrate (#094)
Claim: Companions
Companion: Vislor Turlough

Turlough stares at the cake. “You didn’t have to.”

“Well, I did,” the Doctor tells him, folding flour-dusted arms over his apron. His sleeves are rolled up to the elbow, and there's a little icing smeared on his wrist. “Now blow out the candles.”

“Why?”

“Because… oh, I don’t know. It’s your birthday. It’s tradition.” The smudge of flour on his cheek is particularly endearing. Turlough smirks slightly.

“Human tradition, Doctor,” he points out.

The Doctor exhales impatiently, and Turlough senses an impending pout. “Well, yes, even so. Just blow them out, or the wax’ll drip all over the icing.”

I love them! We've just finished daylight savings (with the extra lie in :D) last weekend - I'm guessing you're just starting it?

And the second one was so sweet. LOL. :)

I don't have a fifth doctor icon, but perhaps if you squint really hard Four and Harry will work?

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Stop bragging about your lie in. Some of us get an hour taken off our sleeping time. Well, not me, cos I work an early morning shift so the boss tells us to ignore the clock change until the afternoon (easier for deliveries, don't ask me how, I've never fully understood the clock changes anyway), so technically I get an hour taken out of my day, not my night. Which is fine by me, I've been up since 5am and having my day of tiredness cut a little shorter is perfect.

And daylight savings time is when it gets darker earlier, so since your clocks went back I'm thinking you actually just started yours :o) What do you call the summer-time clock change? We call ours British Summer-Time (a fact I overlooked when posting, as non-Brits may not know what BST stands for... I'll fix that). Five is obviously therefore talking about Britain - or the northern hemisphere in general, but given Five it's probably Britain. But yeah, clocks went forward today. I wrote that drabble months ago, been waiting to post it for ages!

I like the second one too. I've never written Five/Turlough before, this is the nearest I've got :o) Implied feelings and evidence of fondness. And Turlough noticing things like forearms and cute little smudges of flour *grins*

Four and Harry work! I'm very fond of Harry.

Cute smudges of flour! Forearms! Lie Ins! Aprons! Sleep!

I'm all asquee :D

These are great. Five/Turlough undertones!! *whoops*
Thanks, this is a great gift! *hugs*

XD

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
*grins* You're very welcome. The flour smudges were my favourite part. That, and Five being all "Well, it's your birthday, so I made cake, so, uh, eat it, cos I put all that effort into the baking, and it's your birthday, so, um, just eat it." And Turlough being mildly amused. That was fun to write.

Are you having a good birthday? Get anything cool? Did someone make you cake? :o)

[identity profile] glitterfairy25.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No-one made me a cake, but my best friend brought me a big load of gifts in a Sound of Music theme, (Brown Paper packages tied up with strings...! and a home-made card to match), I got Life On Mars series 1 boxset, a lot of fab books (the QI book being one), Mika and The Feeling albums, some gorgeous jewellrey, and 200 quid, as well as an excellent fandrabble with two of my favourite characters in, and CAKE! XD

It started slowly but it's been brilliant otherwise, the weather's been excellent and I feel so laid back but excited at the same time! I'm having a party tonight, so that'll be good. :D

It sounds like it was fun to write, maybe I'll try my hand at some point without the Mary Sue thing. Flour smudges = attention to detail, which I love. you've got them down to a T, especially with the Doctor making some efforts to introduce non-earth companions to earth traditions, and baking, in a slightly motherly way. Maybe it has some strange Freudian thing to it, but I thought it was exactly how he'd act, wanting to do something special for his boyfriend companion.

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the Sound of Music theme :o) And I have that! 'The Book of General Ignorance', that is. I also like Mika. 'Happy Ending' is a particularly good song - it is both kinda sad and makes me want to smile and skip along the pavement all at the same time. And 'Love Today' is fun.

It's good that you have nice weather. Up here it is muggy and cloudy and not half as warm as 'muggy' would suggest. British Summer-Time is a misnomer.

*grins* I love when my attention to detail is pointed out. It's those bits that get the most thought put into them, cos in so few words they're good for pointing out something important or indicative of something. Here, it's that Turlough is appreciative of both the Doctor's forearms and the effort he's put into making him cake, however little the tradition may mean to him. He finds it cute (flour smudges are always cute) but obviously would never say so.

There is no Freud. Do not screw with my head. Men can bake without being motherly, my friend Adam bakes all the time (although he seems to be turning into a woman, so the jury's out for now...), and when a Doctor-companion pairing are being less canon than usual, all paternal-type impressions go out the window :o) Five just strikes me as the Doctor who'd be most likely to bake as a bit of a hobby. I read a fic where there was frequent baking. Think it was [livejournal.com profile] uktechgirl's. (Speaking of, I saw that she reads your journal - give her a nudge in this direction, I'd rather like to know what she thinks, since she's the main Five/Turlough person.)

Now I shall go sleep, since there has been some alcohol consumption this night and I'm getting a little impatient of having to go so carefully to avoid typos. Also, sleepy. Hope the rest of your birthday was fab. Night :o)

I think it's sometimes the little things that mean everything - the looks, the noticing of stuff, the holding back, sometimes even the things not said. It's also a really cute idea, showing that the Doctor isn't the perfect alien many people think he is.

There's a five/turlough fic somewhere simply entitled "Cake". It's good fun in a slashy kinda way.

As for poking the [livejournal.com profile] uktechgirl I'm gonna do a bit of a showwy off post about what I got, with some photos, and I'll mention your fic, if that's ok?

My birthday was ace, although some people said they'd turn up and didn't :(. Still, everyone who came had a great time, no-one got overly rowdily drunk and there was no smoking, so no smelly-ness afterwards :)

The DJ was good too, playing some fab toons, but his putting on of Robbie William's Angels was not so good. I mean I love the song, but it wasn't that song, it was a parody version, with the Chorus line: "I'm shagging callgirls instead". Not a good song to finish on :(

I'll write that post in the next few days.

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the best to finish with, no. The second to last song played at my year's leavers dance was Angels (the proper version) and I count that as the last one. We'd voted pretty much unanimously for 'Don't Stop Me Now' (it was our year's song, thanks to Queen-obsessed sixth year radio guys *grins*), but no-one told the DJ, so he played a dance version of 'O Flower of Scotland'. There was much glowering at the DJ.
Sound like you had a good time anyway :o)

If you find a link to the Cake fic, I'd very much like to read it :o)

And that's great - I don't have a wide fanbase, so it's always good when people spread the word :o) Comments make me happy, especially from people whose fic I love. It's actually her Five and Turlough I worked from. I've only seen Turlough in The King's Demons and The Five Doctors (doing my best to remedy that) and he's not got much to do in those, so I only have her Turlough to go on for characterisation :o)

And if any companion ever thinks the Doctor is perfect, he/she doesn't hold that opinion for long *grins*

Everyone seemed to enjoy the party, so my panics that they'd hate it were unfounded (?).

Cake is great. And so is pictures.

Heehee. See, Five + Turlough + cake = slashy goodness.

mmmmmm...

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask, who do you 'ship'? (I feel like saying homey at the end of that - it sounds so bad but I thought it was the easiest way to ask.

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, let's think. Going from 1963 onwards, in chronological order (as far as logic allows), including both het and slash pairings, and not limiting myself to the woefully few I can actually write (ie ones I have enjoyed reading or would read because of inclusion of pairing):

Barbara/Ian, Two/Jamie, Three/Brig, Four/Romana II, Tegan/Nyssa, Five/Turlough (obviously), Peri/Erimem, Six/Peri, Six/Jamie, Ace/Hex, Eight/Fitz, Nine/Rose(/Jack), Nine/Jack, Rose/Jack, Ten/Jack, anybody/Jack really *grins*, Ten/Romana II, girl!Doctor (http://community.livejournal.com/girl_doctor/profile)/Rose, Doctor/Doctor (any!). I've probably missed somebody. Jack/Ianto, probably, but I was debating whether or not to include them. Are we counting spin-offs?

Man, the asexual!Who people would hate me... *grins*
ext_10830: Jewellrey (Default)

[identity profile] glitterfairy25.livejournal.com 2007-03-28 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think everyone ships Two/jamie, they are just so, er shippable, and so very slashy. FIVE/TURLOUGH (as well you know!) Peri/Erimem to an extent... really not enough fic round for that :( I'd say Six/Peri is cute, but I can't see anything actually happening between them. Ace/Hex OBV, pretty much canon as well, Eight/Fitz, (even though I've never read the guy) Eight/Charley, Ten/Rose, Jack/anyone (I read one fic of Jack/Peri!) Five/Ten/Eight any mixture of (As you can guess, I'm a bit of a slave to the pretty doctors), and I haven't really seen any Torchwood, but sure, we can count it and other spin offs.

the asexual!Who people would hate me...
all the more reason to ship my dear ;)

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-28 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, damn. There's a request for Peri/Erimem in the drabble tag on [livejournal.com profile] who_otp but no fic :o( That's usually my first port of call for uncommon pairings. I'll see if I can spin something in a drabble - I managed misleadingly implied Tegan/Nyssa (http://purple-bug.livejournal.com/74396.html) (it can be taken as innocent or not *grins*). Peri/Erimem would be fun.

*laughs* I've never read any Fitz either! I'm still on Sam (*yawn*). But I've read enough fic to get his character a bit, and enough Eight/Fitz that I definitely think the two of them fit well together :o)

Not overly fond of Charley - I liked her at first, then I got bored with her - she needed to leave many stories ago.

I have Opinions on Ten/Rose. I sometimes enjoy the pairing if done well, but Nine/Rose works so much better :o) My ex-girlfriend used to say that watching Ten and Rose was like watching a girl who's in love with her gay best friend.

As for Six/Peri... I wasn't much taken to it either, at least before December last year. Then I read this. (http://community.livejournal.com/temporalfic/12904.html)

This is getting long. Do you know how to make the comments shrink down into just the subjects?
ext_10830: Jewellrey (Never knew you felt that way)

[identity profile] glitterfairy25.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That is hot. And girl!doctor seems such an in-depth character, and complete fanon! I love it. Rachel Wiesz and girl!Doctor FTW!

Nine was good an all, but it just seemed that Christopher Eccleston didn't give the character the enthusiasm it deserved. His Doctor was good, he was good, but his enthusiasm wasn't, and that kinda put me off. Ten and Six, now there's some enthusiasm you can be proud of!! (Or rather their actual counterparts).

and comments... screening? I don't know what it does but it must do something... if you find out what will you let me know?

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It is indeed hot. Which is weird for me...

And girl!Doctor is indeed fantastic. I wrote a fic with her and Chronotis. That was fun :o) It's somewhere in there.

Okay, gonna have to argue with you on that. I thought Ecclestone was very enthusiastic! All those times he gets all manic and hoppy, is that not enthusiasm? And just because he's acting a serious bit doesn't mean he isn't putting enthusiasm into it - just means he's not letting it colour the emotion he's supposed to be portraying. I love Nine - he was my first Doctor. Of course Five is my unmoving favourite. Unless they cast Rachel Weisz as Eleven in a few years time ;o) (And actually, I wouldn't put it past Rusty to do just that.)

Nah, screening means I have to approve each comment before it's shown. I'll ask someone.

maybe not the character of the ninth doctor but the role of the Docotr since it's return. It seems he left ASAP, he has never really talked about it and I just feel he's not as enthusiastic about the role as the best are. He was good though.

My favourite used to be Nine in 2005, then in came Ten :) during 2006 and then I sorta moved onto Five and now I think Six and Eight are getting a bit of a look-in. It's all good.

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see what you mean. Yes, I agree with you on that; he left because of type-casting or something (although Dead Ringers did a brilliant sketch on an alternative reason that he left: Trekkie parents - although I am living proof that Trek and Who are not incompatible) but he wasn't very... Well, at the moment Tennant says it's the best job in the world. And he does all those tv appearances. As far as I know, Ecclestone didn't.

But I still prefer Nine over Ten *hides* Sure, Ten can be fun, but I'm looking forward to his maniac giddiness being a little more subdued this year (hopefully). I hope the rambling rants don't go away though. But delusions of godhood and invulnerability are not good, especially when you're hyper. And besides, Nine's manic moments were more infectiously happy, I think. I never wanted to slap Nine for being happy. Ten on the other hand... well, Donna did that for me :o)

no need to hide :) but I have to say I think the madness is great. apart from the "all that hopping" bit on the CIN special. That just made me cringe.

[identity profile] bluekiwibubble.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This, you mean? yeah, I did read it, just had forgotten.
Aww. They are sweet together =) And I can see the Dr inflicting human traditions on Turlough, him /pretending/ to hate it =)

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks :o) And yup, he's only pretending *grins* Glad you liked it.

[identity profile] pontisbright.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheers for the link (and reminder!). These are so very adorable: great use of the constraints of the drabble length to be economical but expressive. I do love the idea of Five-the-anglophile and Turlough the alien-who-hates-Earth, constantly in gentle conflict about whether such things matter.

I love both of these but the cake one is particularly fab: not just because I appear to have some kind of cake-based obsession when it comes to those two, but because Turlough noticing all the little details is so telling. Mmm, subtext. Subtext with flour-dusted Five and smirking gingers. Yeah, baby! :D

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm delighted you noticed all the details I had intended :o) Especially the details - cos the details themselves are a detail :o) (If this sounds a little strange, it's cos I'm tired and hyper - a fun but impractical combination!) But yeah, the smudges and whatnot are important - subtext is everything. It's also an interesting anagram. *looks innocent*

I do love the idea of Five-the-anglophile and Turlough the alien-who-hates-Earth, constantly in gentle conflict about whether such things matter.
I think that's my favourite depiction of Five/Turlough. I need to see more of Turlough, so I've just been basing him on fic so far. Yours, mainly :o) I'm actually quite chuffed that you find them adorable :oD

I'm sure I meant to say something else, but I keep getting distracted by Tribbles, and by Chekov being adorable and Russian, so I'm going to give up and go to sleep :o) Thanks for commenting, made me all happy before bed :o)

[identity profile] pontisbright.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, you must watch more of the ginger one in person! Sadly he spends much of his time off-screen due to having been locked in a cupboard for continuity purposes, but he hams it up beautifully given half a chance. I tend to ficify him into something a bit less twatty than he is really, on account of him mellowing a bit over time, and me having something of an obsession with bread products. But I've sort of lost track of where canon ends and fanon begins with Turlough, to be honest.

You have seen the Black Guardian trilogy, though, right? If not, procure at once. Sneaky lurky ginger brilliance by the bucketload.

Yay for Tribbles.

[identity profile] purple_bug.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
I have all of Five in my possession, I'm just trying to find the time around work and flat wrangling to watch all the Who that I have. At the moment I'm loving Three, but after Colony in Space I will take a break from the wonderfulness that is the Brig's moustache (and eyebrows, can't forget the eyebrows) and turn my attention to Five :o
Sneaky lurky ginger brilliance - *giggle*

And yeah, Tribbles rock. That was actually one of the first things I learnt about Trek. From a poster in my RE teacher's room (she was a damn cool teacher). "Klingons hate Tribbles (and Tribbles hate Klingons)."
